Photo by @MichaelGeorge // Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka is first and foremost a massive sanctuary for elephants. The 120 square miles of protected land are also teeming with a seemingly infinite number of birds and their calls. The sounds of these many species echo through the night, and the sound of the peacock often stands out above the rest. Upon arriving in the park, as the sun was setting, a park ranger asked me to go on a short walk. We ended up on a rocky outcrop with a massive tree in the center. "This is where the peacocks and peahens come to roost for the night," he explained. In only a few minutes the birds appeared from all sides, slowly making their way up into the branches of the tree. You may not have ever seen a peacock fly but here is one, making his way to the lower level of the tree.
