Monserrate Hill has been considered sacred since pre-Columbian times, when the area was inhabited by the indigenous Muisca. Pilgrims can regularly be seen ascending the hill's 1,500 steps, some on their knees, to petition the Fallen Lord (El Señor Caido) for miracles at the summit’s 17th-century church.
