Happy birthday to Dutch artist Pieter de Hooch, born on this day in 1629. Like his contemporary Johannes Vermeer, de Hooch played a pioneering role in the advancement of genre painting in 17th century Holland. He was especially gifted as a painter of interiors. In this work, de Hooch depicts a family in a luxurious setting. However, the family’s ease and prosperity exist in tension with another mysterious scene. ? Take a closer look at the open door on the far right and you’ll see a young man confronting a bearded figure on the threshold.
