In today’s season finale of @the.wing’s No Man’s Land podcast, @alexis_coe explores the history of women’s social clubs. The Queen Esthers, The Jugs, Sorosis, and more. Women’s clubs were dismissed as frivolous, their interests as minor, their contributions as immaterial, but in reality these diverse groups of women tackled anti-slavery, anti-poverty, created the modern library system, and more. Harriet Tubman was a club woman. So was Ida B. Wells. When I began working on The Wing, I read a 2010 headline: “Citing Declining Membership, Women’s Clubs Around The Country Close.” Excited to report that as 2018 comes to an end, we’ve all proved that headline wrong.
