Myra, her mother, describes difficult nights in the Philippines without her dad. Althea would dress her pillows with her father’s basketball jerseys and fall asleep crying as she clutched her father’s photographs. He is back, temporarily, and Althea holds on to her father. "It’s okay if I don’t get more toys," she tells him. "As long as you’re here." The Philippines is one of the top emigrating countries worldwide, with one in ten Filipinos abroad. Around the world Filipinos are ubiquitous across industries: we are nurses, caregivers, seafarers, domestic workers, and engineers. But when overseas Filipinos come home they are bagong bayani: Our new heroes.
