Did you know even though true Foxes have many physical traits and behaviors that are very cat like, they are far more related to dogs. The nearest common ancestor between cats and foxes was an animal that lived about 55 million years ago. Scientists call this animal Dormaalocyon. It was a small animal weighing about 2 lbs. and lived mostly in trees. It has been described as a cross between a squirrel and a panther. The closest common ancestor between foxes and dogs was a animal that lived a mere 10 million years ago. It is called Hesperocyon and was the first Canid. It weighed around 10 lbs and was longer and had shorter legs than modern Canids. Hesperocyon is very well represented in the fossil record suggesting it was a very successful animal. Modern canids from Fennec foxes to dholes to the dog laying by your feet all have Hesperocyon to thank for at least some of their remarkable traits.
