I learned during a special tour of underground tunnels, arches and passageways which wind beneath the Muslim Quarter, that the original Wall stretches significantly further than what is seen by most visitors. Considered holy due to its connection to the Temple Mount, the holiest site in the Jewish faith lying just behind it, the Wall is the holiest place where Jews are permitted to pray. For Muslims, the Wall is the site where the Prophet Muhammed tied his steed on his night journey to Jerusalem before ascending to paradise, and constitutes the Western border of Haram ash-Sharif, the Noble Sactuary, which includes the al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock.
