Oh Patagonia. 25 years ago your granite spires captured my fascination. Over a three year period my obsession with the three towers of the Torre Valley kept a firm lock on my motivation. That the ice clad needles were protected by atrocious weather only furthered my resolve to test my mettle. Revisiting the range and the community that lives near the mountain brings back memories. Chalten, Argentina is the town built up around these spires. A quarter century on the town is much larger and the glaciers noticeably smaller. Climbers live in town, staying at hostels with a variety of dining options, most with large screen TVs pinned to a satellite weather forecast. Regardless of change, this is a powerful place. @jenniloweanker and I joined Wilderness Travel ( @wildernesstravel ) for a symposium with conservationist @kristine_tompkins and free soloist @alexhonnold . The venerable @rickridgeway had to leave at the last moment to be with his family. Kris shared the trajectory of how she and her late husband Doug have worked with the governments of Chile and Argentina to transfer land from private ownership to national parks. Her work is benefits these unique ecosystems and will ensure future generations will be able to appreciate nature in its primal form. We revisited the Fun Hog expedition, celebrating its 50th anniversary. Rick asked me to present his experiences, from K2 to Tibet. I have a better understanding of Rick after sharing his presentation to our group. Much respect. 3 out of the 4 days we were in Los Glaciares National Park were climbable. This brings me back to the last three images of polymath @johndeucey (@bigwallgear ) on the Compressor Route, the reticent Steve Gerberding (not on social media?) on Torre Egger and historian and general all round crusher @rolo_garibotti just below the summit of Standhardt with flying ice cubes. Just for good measure. The flower is the petite Patagonian Orchid, which we were fortunate to see on a our hike.
