Announcing the grand prize winning image for the 2018 National Geographic Photo Contest. Expert judges reviewed thousands of photographs entered in the contest, ultimately selecting the most powerful images as the top winners in the competition.
The grand prize winner by Jassen Todorov @jassensf pictures thousands of Volkswagen and Audi cars sitting idle in the Mojave Desert near Victorville, California. Diesel models manufactured from 2009 to 2015 intentionally cheated emissions tests mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Following the scandal, VW recalled millions of cars.
