On Friday, my parents said goodbye to their beloved dog. He'd suffered complications from diabetes for years, but they'd diligently nursed him through blindness, chronic infection, and multiple bouts of paralysis. It was hard for them to finally let go. So incredibly hard. They'd been together for over a decade.
I brought Tucker into my life when Gracie was about a year old. She was a holy freakin' terror, and I was stupid enough to believe that all she needed was "a little friend." Oh jeez. ?
Not surprisingly, I then found myself with TWO terrors on my hands. And things only got worse. Much, much worse.
There were funny moments, like when the house got so suddenly suspiciously quiet, I raced to the bedroom. There I found them in a cloud of dancing white foam, Tucker joyfully shredding my expensive mattress topper while Gracie stood frozen, her tiny face the perfect picture of calculated innocence: "It was him. I swear." Mostly, though, it was a lot of crying (me), a lot of barking (them), steadily escalating dog-aggressiveness, and sooooo much pee and poop.
I studied dog behaviour.
I took them on rigorous training walks, which left all three of us mentally exhausted.
I forked over thousands of precious dollars for a "dog behaviourist" who told me to lock them in the bathroom when they acted out. (Double ??. Continued in comments...)
