I was asked by Japanese band @ONE OK ROCK to make a video about the Asian-American experience. So I wrote about how it felt to grow up both in an upper middle class Canadian suburb and a lower income Ohio town. Long story short - you never feel comfortable in your own skin. But it became the very basis for artistic insight. So thank you bad experiences of childhood. We are all defined by the things that broke us. 
To that end though - I really couldn’t give a fuck about our cultural obsession with identity politics. The last thing I want to do is fuel more resentment-based social media posts and divisiveness. Truthfully, I think everyone can relate to being an outsider - there is commonality there. Even the ‘bullies’ in the video are trying to look cool, stand out, fit in. 
Thanks to the entire team for making this come to life - you are all wonderful collaborators. Also I was very stoked to include the face changer of Sichuan opera. The dancer learned from her uncle and grandfather. It is a very guarded technique passed down directly from dancers in that region.

今回、日本のバンド @ONE OK ROCK から、アジア系アメリカ人の経験に基づいたMVを撮ってくれと依頼を受けた。それで、カナダの郊外にある上流中産階級やアメリカオハイオ州の低所得層エリアで、僕が成長する中で感じた事を書いた。
単刀直入に言うと、僕は常に自分の人種に違和感を感じて生きてきた。ただ、それは芸術的洞察力の基礎になっている。だから子供の頃の嫌な経験には感謝しているよ。
過去に傷つけられた経験によって今の自分がある。だけど僕は正直、アイデンティティ政治に対する文化的脅迫観念とか、マジでどうでも良かったんだ。
僕が最もしたくないのは、恨みつらみとか不和を元にした作品をソーシャルメディアに出す事なんだ。正直、部外者な気持ちになる経験なんて誰もが経験してきた事だと思うし、ありふれてる事なんだよ。MVの中でのいじめっ子だってカッコよくいようと頑張ってるんだ、まさしく「はみ出して なじめ」なんだ。
この作品を作り上げるために頑張ったチームに感謝してる。皆とっても素晴らしい共同制作者だ。そして、川劇の変臉(へんれん)を取り入れる事が出来た事にとても感動したよ。演者の女性は、叔父さんやお爺さんから習ったんだ。この芸はその地域で代々、一子相伝の秘伝とされてるものなんだよ。
※Sichuan opera=川劇…中国四川省の伝統演劇。瞬時に瞼譜（隈取）を変える技巧で有名。
