They shelter the chicks on their feet to keep them from freezing on the sea ice where they gather. But it’s the melting of that sea ice that may become of a bigger problem for their survival. As Antarctica’s ice edge fractures under the forces of global warming, emperor penguins are going to become symbols of vulnerability just like polar bears already are for the Arctic.
