“Orangutans are among my best friends. I say this as fact, not as an allegation, claim, or an affirmation but simply as fact. I have been with orangutans 47 years which approaches half a century. Orangutans are curious and have an intellect equal to a child but the emotional complexity of a human adult. Here Riska, a free-ranging Orangutan who knows me well, approaches me as I try to take photos with my cell phone. She wants to see what the dancing, glimmering lights on my cell screen are all about. She’s determined and gets in front of me for a better view. I think this is my moment and snap a photo. She’s rarely this close to me but curiosity got the better of her. She doesn’t want the cell phone, doesn’t grab and isn’t really that interested in it at all. It’s the shimmering images that attract her. After a minute or two or maybe even three, she loses interest and walks away. Does she understand that one of the shimmering images was her? Probably but orangutans don’t seem to be overly interested in others’ perception of themselves. It sometimes makes me ready to cry to think that we humans have put wild orangutan populations on the edge of extinction through our inability to think ahead and get past our greed. Vast timber estates and palmoil plantations have decimated tropical rain forests and peatswamp forests in Borneo, leaving thousands of the great red apes destitute and homeless. Please help us.
