Photo by @BrianSkerry | A group of happy Spotted Dolphins engaged in socializing behavior in the Bahamas. After humans, dolphins have the largest brains in the animal kingdom, relative to body size, but their brains function different than humans. Dolphins keep half of their brain awake while sleeping because they are voluntary breathers and must also remain vigilant for predators. They also see much of their world acoustically using echolocation. For researchers, understanding dolphin lives is a challenge due to finding long-term, predictable populations to study, dealing with weather and being unable to spend long times underwater to observe them. Because of this, dolphins' complex lives remain largely a mystery and understanding the full extent of how these animals live may take a long time.
