A rare, fully attributed Spanish colonial work in our upcoming Latin American auction, this painting by Nicolás Enríquez was recently exhibited in the ground-breaking exhibition ‘Painted in Mexico’, which has travelled from Fomento Cultural Banamex to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and finally the Metropolitan Museum of Art.⠀

Here, Enríquez draws on the Christian themes of European painting and Mexico’s own artistic past – the composition is a reference to the Afro-Mexican painter Juan Correa’s 'Assumption of the Virgin' in Mexico City’s Catedral Metropolitana.⠀
