New York-based artist Rachel Rose explores fluctuating societal norms and historical events in her perception-distorting video work. As inaugural recipient of the Future Fields Commission, Rose has just unveiled her film Wil-o-Wisp on European soil for the first time at Turin’s Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo following its successful debut at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Set against a rural backdrop of 16th Century England, the work explores the persecution of women accused of deviant witchcraft through the life of protagonist, Elspeth Blake. ‘This state that people were in at this time was so disorientating, almost close to psychedelic, so in the gallery I wanted to create a feeling of that, with light,’ Rose reflected in conversation with Wallpaper’s New York Editor @skiptotheru. Wil-o-Wisp will run until 3 February 2019 at @fondazionesandretto, Turin.
