This is a DOB painting that is coming up at Christie’s on Friday the 16th.
With DOB paintings, depending on how I feel and what the mood of the world is like at the time of production, I keep changing his appearance, color palettes, how I apply the pigments on the canvas, etc. This piece is singular even among the variations in that I tried to render the design as chaotic as possible. His ears are growing appendixes and there are eyes within eyes; the theme was to dismantle the character beyond a biological structure.
For this year’s ComplexCon, @complexcon the event’s organizers took note of this singular design and, with minor revisions, we made it part of ComplexCon 2018’s main visual. The event’s concept this year was a cycle of culture and individual, from chaos to growth to enlightenment, and this DOB represented the “growth.” For the event I created a costume version of this DOB and walked around the show ground wearing it.
The work I designed and created long, long ago has been revived, speaking to the theme that is urgent and current. Those works I create through the process of being honest to myself in that moment and diving deep within to excavate tend to be the ones that have long lives. What an uncanny timing that this painting, just after it was revived at ComplexCon this year, is now appearing in the auction!
