Cotonou has become a crossroads of West African commerce, a so-called “market town,” that enables trade with the countries of the African interior such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The city’s poorest neighborhood, Plakodji, is a slum which sits on the shore directly adjacent to the Autonomous Port of Cotonou, one of West Africa’s largest ports and the main pillar of Benin’s economy. Despite their proximity to the port, the people of Plakodji see few benefits from it. Their lives are defined by everyday struggles; a lack of education and jobs leaves them mired in grinding poverty. But despite the serious obstacles that they must overcome, respect and tolerance reign in this tightly-knit community.
