She's a tax advisor by day, but in her free time, Rupinder Ashan (@makeup_by_rups) uses body paint and makeup to transform into ghouls, demigods and figures from ancient myth. Spending up to seven hours on her simplest looks — and twice that on more intricate efforts — Rupinder immerses herself so fully in the work that she calls it “the ultimate form of meditation.”
The self-taught makeup artist also discovered an unexpected benefit to her art: a deeper appreciation of her own culture. “It wasn’t until I started body painting that I rediscovered my roots. I really wasn't interested in my Indian heritage. Now, it's a big part of the conversation I want to put across. The deeper I dig, the more I find, and the richer it becomes.”
