GOOD Morning! It’s Sunday, our @yearsofliving day devoted to carbon pricing! This week's post is from May Xie, a student at the University of Washington who was born and raised in China. May is also working to pass Initiative 1631 in Washington on Nov 6, which would be the country's first carbon fee! “Having clean air as a fundamental right can seem obvious until it’s taken away from the people closest to you. I used to believe that having to breathe polluted air is something that only happens back home in populated areas in China. I believed that immigrating to a new country, this country, would bring a better quality of life. For years, I never had to worry about using masks to protect my lungs from smog. And I can say that fortunately, I still don’t have to worry--most of the time. Last summer, as climate change caused extreme weather and led to forest fires, the smoke carried over to beautiful Seattle and hid away the clouds, darkening the sun. It didn’t bother me that much, as I carried on with my day, being careful about limiting outdoor activities. However, I didn’t realize how much this smoke could affect my best friend. My best friend suffers from asthma and is in and out of hospitals on a regular basis. From my elementary knowledge, I only assumed that she needed her inhaler whenever she felt light-headed. It was only when she called me on her way home on that smoky day that I saw how weak she looked. She ended up fainting during her trip and luckily, had a friend to help her stand up again. This is a story that I keep close to my heart because it serves as a reminder that this environment that we live in impacts everyone in different ways. I believe we need to #putapriceonit because the people closest to me deserve clean air. That's why I am voting yes on I-1631, a policy that will be on Washington's ballot this year that would charge corporate polluters and invest in clean energy. This bill will be the first ripple of a wave that would put Washington as a leader in environmental justice and show to others that protecting their loved ones starts with protecting our environment!” Photo by @nathanaugustreed
