Akanuma Pond is a tranquil pond located in the depths of the forest of Hakkoda Mountains. Although it may not be as vivid as the increasingly popular Tsutanuma Pond nearby, the morning glow lights up the forest in beautiful red hues. Due to the color of the sunrise, the forest becomes reddish even outside the fall foliage season. The morning colors reflecting on the leafless white beech trees and Akanuma pond are a wonderful sight.
It takes a 45-minute walk in the dark forest trail to see Akanuma Pond at sunrise. We recommend going with a knowledgeable local (and if possible, an employed guide) or inspecting the route beforehand in daytime with the detailed map to explore this natural beauty.
