El Anatsui uses found objects, such as bottle caps, copper wire, and other bits of discarded material, to compose impressive wall-hanging sculptures.⠀
.⠀
For Anatsui, the material of bottle caps acts as a metaphor for Ghana’s social and economic history: 'I thought of the objects as links between Africa and Europe. European traders introduced the bottle tops, and alcohol was used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.'⠀
.⠀
El Anatsui (b. 1944), 'Recycled Dreams (Uniting the World with a Stitch)', 2005. 78 x 108 in. (198.1 x 274.3 cm.). Estimate: $700,000–1,000,000.⠀
