‘Taxi, 45th/Broadway’ is a collaboration painting between Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol from circa 1984-85, which was at one time in the personal collection of legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace. Each a highly-influential figure in his own right, Basquiat and Warhol began working together in the mid-1980s, in preparation for a joint exhibition at Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York in 1985. The present example engages with art history, politics and race, depicting a taxi driver cursing profanities at a black man as he attempts to hail a cab. Despite Basquiat’s meteoric ascension from downtown graffiti street artist to famous icon of the 1980s New York art scene, his race still prevailed as his primary identifier outside the realm of the art world. ‘Taxi, 45th/Broadway’ therefore reflects on a deeply personal and frustrating recurrence in Basquiat’s everyday life.
