I'm not crafty. I love wrapping presents, but they inevitably have bulky corners and seams shiny with extra layers of scotch tape. My brief forays into knitting and crocheting mostly just made me giggle. And our house is 90% bare white wall, because all my attempts at prettying it up leave me cringing.
But needle felting is different. I accept the endearing imperfections with a rare-for-me grace. I accept that others are masters of this craft and I....am not. And that's okay.
I adore the mindfulness of the poke-poke-poking. If my mind wanders for even a second, I swiftly stab myself back to the here and now: "Ouch! Thank you! Here I am. Here I am."
I love seeing a creature emerge from a soft pile of wool.
I even love that inevitable moment when I almost give up, but don't. Usually I break a sweat over a particularly tricky angle, or something that insists on being something else, and I think, "I never finish anything. This is no different."
But then it is.
I have no use for these little wonders.
They dot our house, but don't really contribute.
And tonight I'll probably make another one.
P.S. Seconds after I snapped this, Gracie grabbed that orca by the dorsal fin and trotted away. Good girl, Gracie. xo.
