In the 1990s, no one knew how to measure multiple sclerosis reliably. It was nearly impossible to show that an experimental drug helped patients improve, so few treatments had been approved. Change began when a new test emerged: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI showed disease activity more reliably than clinician assessments & showed treatment effects more clearly. The tool enabled researchers to see that emerging new drugs were altering the disease in patients. Today there are over a dozen drugs approved for multiple sclerosis, with more to come. We’d like to have an equivalently reliable test for all of the other diseases we care about in neuroscience, including depression. If we had a better detector for depression, it would change the game.
