To everyone who's been asking how Gracie's doing: I'm sorry for not updating you all sooner. I forget sometimes how much she's loved!
Her test results came back as "borderline" Cushing's, and the vet predicts she'll have the full-blown disease within a couple of months. She's had some worrying symptoms for years now (heavy panting and that adorable big pink pot belly!), and I'm kicking myself for not going with my gut when we were assured she was still within normal range. This sort of thing is best treated before it really takes hold. But vets (and doctors) often place way too much emphasis on the numbers.
Lesson learned. Sorry, Gracie. ?
Today she started her first dose of medication, which, even if it doesn't successfully treat the cause of the Cushing's, might help with some of her increasing cognitive dysfunction. Aside from her episodes of confusion, which smash my heart into a trillion pieces, she has little interest these days in her very fave things (like the beloved ball in this photo) and she doesn't seem to know anymore when she's gotta go to the bathroom. So she just.....goes. Whenever. Wherever. And then seems surprised.
We initially thought it was just normal senior dog stuff, and there wasn't much we could do, so this diagnosis actually gives us some hope she can improve. Fingers, toes, and paws crossed. xo.
