Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan in dawn light – This image is yet another example of why I chose to spend so long working close to home and with one of our most overlooked species, the mute swan. Readily accessible on most bodies of water throughout the UK these fascinating birds are bewilderingly beautiful to work with, especially if the light is right. On this morning you can immediately see the effect that photographing in glancing dawn sunlight creates, especially when the rising sun filters through the trees that line this secluded lake. Pools of sunlight form on the lake, it’s surface blackened by the absence of wind, the swans gliding slowly around in apparent tranquillity. At right one of the cygnets has already passed through the sunlight and fallen somewhat into underexposure, light which is now bathing the preening adult and the cygnet behind her. It is the adult that I have exposed for, it is on her that I seek to retain all of the important detail and what happens to the exposure on the two cygnets is beyond my control. If I could give any aspiring wildlife photographer one single piece of advice then it would be this; seek out the wildlife close to where you live, invest time watching and learning and be there at dawn and dusk. Learn to notice the light and how it falls, the effect that it creates in different conditions and on different subjects. This is how you can really hone your skills, develop your learning, realise the beauty that exists on your doorstep and find new stories to tell. Immerse yourself as much as your time will allow, every minute of time invested will be well spent.
