As far as metalwork. I suggest grabbing Ron Fournier’s “Fabricators Handbook” on Amazon. Lots of good beginners knowledge in those pages. Maybe also find a local race shop and ask if you can help out for a couple hours on Saturday’s. Race shops are always under the gun and could always use a extra set of hands. Great way to get your foot in the door. My advice you should not stop painting cars. Good paint guys are very hard to find. Keep making money until your metal skills are up to speed. Oh I almost forgot you age comment. Well I’m 49 too! You have to know age is an asset in skilled trades. As long as you keep pushing yourself to learn new things.
