Same Injustice 50 years later with the same peaceful protest. Our history books don’t record these events. Via @democracynow with @get_repost

Fifty years ago today, on October 16, 1968, U.S. athletes John Carlos and Tommie Smith stood on the Olympic podium in Mexico City alongside Australian silver medalist Peter Norman and raised their black-gloved fists during the national anthem to denounce racism in the United States. The backlash that followed ended all of their professional careers. Carlos and Smith were harassed by the FBI for being "extremists." John Carlos told us in 2011 that his family was surveilled by the FBI after the Olympics, and his wife later died by suicide due to stress and paranoia. "She couldn’t take it no more, you know, having a phone tapped every day, being followed every day," he says. Carlos still advises young athletes trying to become politically engaged, after his historic action in Mexico City. "I was there to actually make a statement,” he told us. “I was ashamed of America for America’s deeds, what they were doing in history, as well as what they were doing at that particular time.” #otd #onthisday #1968 #olympics #race #blackpower #johncarlos #tommiesmith #blackhistory #history #mexicocity
