EDITOR’S NOTES ? – our arts editor @ashleighkane: On this day in 1988, painter, photographer, writer, filmmaker, performance artist, and activist, David Wojnarowicz, pulled on a denim jacket in Rockville, Maryland, and headed to ACT UP’s “Seize Control of the FDA” demonstration. Having formed in New York two years earlier, ACT UP had begun to spread across the US, and even to cities such as Berlin. For almost a decade, the Aids epidemic had ravaged the livelihoods of friends, lovers, neighbours, and strangers. ACT UP was formed as a response to the inadequacies of the FDA’s – The Food and Drug Administration – failure to act with urgency. Responsible for the testing and approval of possible Aids medication, it took eight years to approve the first drug to treat the illness. Photographer William (or Bill) Dobbs was at rally, camera in hand, and, while he may not have realised it at the time, he documented one of the most important images in Aids activism history. Capturing Wojnarowicz from behind, his jacket blazed, “IF I DIE OF AIDS, FORGET BURIAL, JUST DROP MY BODY ON THE STEPS OF THE FDA”. A year earlier, Wojnarowicz's former lover, fellow artist Peter Hujar, had died from the illness. Hujar’s last moments were captured by Wojnarowicz, who was with him when he exhaled his last breath on 26 November 1987. Tragically, Wojnarowicz would also succumb to the illness just a few years later on 22 July, 1992. #Aids #awareness #Wojnarowicz #ACTUP ?
