Maria Tallchief was considered America’s first major prima ballerina, making her the first person of Native American descent to hold the rank. Throughout her life, she remained closely tied to her Osage history and spoke out against stereotypes and misconceptions about Native Americans. She was honored by the people of Oklahoma and inducted in the National Women’s Hall of Fame. In 1996, she received a Kennedy Center Honor for lifetime achievements. #inspirationwednesday
