発展途上国で作られた作物や製品を適正な価格で継続的に取引することにより、生産者の持続的な生活向上を支える仕組みです。

コーヒー生産国のほとんどは、発展途上国といわれています。コーヒー豆の価格は国際市場で決められ、小規模農家たちは遠く離れたマーケット動向を知ることができません。そのため、生産や生活に必要な十分な利益を得られず、不安定な生活を余儀なくされています。
