In Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's testimony today, one moment stood out: “Indelible in the hippocampus is the laughter,” she said, and her voice cracked a little bit at this part. “The uproarious laughter between the two, and their having fun at my expense.” Watching her say this singular formation of words was to witness a person’s lifetime of resilience, compressed into instinct. Where the brain churns experience into memory, where certain moments of violence or indignity sit and unspool with you even as the body moves on physically from whatever it endured, leashing you to the place. Your cells pick up the shape of the ones that formed then, in the course of fight or flight, so that even as you grow and go out into the world, the memory comes, too.
