Shimano Challenge Series: Meet the Team Matthew Stearns: “My earliest memory of fishing is at our family cabin, on the dock, just under a willow branch that hung low over the water. It was my go-to spot and always produced, whether it was a bass, perch, sunfish or even a dogfish. I spent hours on that dock. During spring break in Minnesota, most families head for the beaches of Florida, but we packed our bags and headed to the nearest open water, Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. This is where I met my mentor, Ed Franko. Besides the many fishing tips and tricks he shared, he often used the phrase ‘sometimes chicken, sometimes feathers,’ which has proven to be so true for this sport. My fishing hero is Brandon Palaniuk. Growing up, he was the one angler I felt I related to most. After many years on the water and many tournaments, I have realized I am most confident using light line and a spinning reel. I would be crazy to think any other way since my finesse fishing approach has brought me a 30-inch walleye, a 12.25-inch bluegill, a 7-pound largemouth bass and a 6.5-pound smallmouth bass. My goals include fishing in every state, and after graduating college, working in the fishing industry. If I’m not on the water, you’ll find me on the basketball court or claiming Victory Royales on Fortnite.” Hear more from Matt during Saturday’s Facebook Live as we kick off the Shimano Challenge Series! #FishShimano @stearnsfishing @brandonpalaniuk
