Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan in a blizzard – There can be no better photographic conditions in which to find oneself than heavy snow, especially when it’s those big flakes of slow falling snow. This image was captured a few years ago at one of my regular haunts, the kind of place that I will go whenever snow is forecast. The logic behind this decision is that these kinds of conditions are increasingly rare in Derbyshire and so I’d always prefer to go somewhere where I can guarantee finding a subject as opposed to working in a more risky way with less predictable animals or birds. A mute swan might of course be a familiar and easily recognised creature but it is also quite common on inland waterways and it is also astonishingly beautiful. Here the reflected light from the frozen lake surface is bouncing up underneath the swan, eliminating any and all shadows whilst he overcast light gives everything a wonderfully even tone. By getting down low I was able to photograph the swan against a distant but dark-ish backdrop, thereby allowing me to reveal the sheer amount of falling snow whilst the swans bill, a distinct orange colour adds a little punch of colour to an otherwise largely monochromatic scene. It’s head position, by good fortune, also creates a feeling of symmetry in the image and offers balance and so my decision that day feels vindicated. I might of course have preferred to capture an image of something more elusive like a fox in the snow but by doing that I could easily have wasted these fantastic conditions by chasing shadows, ending up with zero images as a result. This way I was at least able to make the most of the weather and in doing so add another dimension to my already burgeoning swan files.
