The incredible Issa Rae debuts Spring 2019.
This is an emotional one for me because this truly is one of those moments where my dreams have come true.
When I was starting to do research about the Tharu community for the Spring 2019 collection, I knew I wanted to find a way to honour them by working with their artisans to create, because their art- be it the walls that they paint in their homes, or the tattoos on their arms or just the way they embrace colours like I have never seen before -had to be celebrated and given a spotlight for the world to see their splendour. But more than that I wanted to be able to celebrate their talent, generate some kind of employment, give back and honour them by making sure they were generously compensated and recognized for their incredible work.
This look is hand embroidered by Dhimali women, female artisans in Nepal.
This all came true and more.
Not only was I able to celebrate their work and our Nepali heritage on our runway, beautifully worn by one of my favourite muses @adesuwa, but now, to see one of the most talented artists, a personal favourite of mine, Issa Rae wear it so beautifully brought me to tears. It really did.
We are also pre-selling this on Moda Operandi, which means that we are able to give back even more by funding the continuation of this craft and empowering the female artisans with opportunity for economic development, run in partnership with our foundation a Shikshya Foundation Nepal.
To be able to give back to the community that inspires me so much, in every possible way, is an honour and a privilege. It’s a blessing for which I am forever grateful— grateful to the hardworking women, grateful to my dedicated and talented team who brought everything to life BTS & on the runway, grateful to Issa and Jason (Issa’s incredible stylist), and grateful to all of our retailers and above all our supporters and community for sharing in our vision of #luxurywithsoul.
