The New Zealand Sports Performance Research Institute studied the performance of surfers during competitive surfing events and found that surfers spend 54% of their time paddling, 28% of their time waiting for waves, and only 8% of their time actually riding waves. I think most would agree that the paddling and waiting (and falling) were still an integral part of their success. (Thanks @sarahbradley1 for the stat)
