She should be in school, they say. I’ve heard it many times. She needs a proper education and proper socialization. Those too. We sit with the math books, and she’s like me...it’s tough for her. Her brain, like mine, struggles with numbers and rote memorization. Yet together, she’s learning it...because I understand exactly how she’s feeling. She struggled to learn to multiply and it’s taken her several months, but we’ve gotten it, with patience and empathy and true understanding...because she is a little me. She can read a 150-page chapter book in a couple of hours and then tell you all about it excitedly, and dive into the next book. Her reading level is somewhere along the lines of an eighth-grader. Her writing is beautiful and will move you to tears. The first day of school, we sat outside and painted the landscape, and her colors and brushstrokes were abstract and beautiful and spot on. Yet more than all of this, in this life, she comes alive. She rushes outside in the morning, as soon she’s finished up with a book in bed and a little bit of the dreaded math. She comes in after the day, dirt streaked and knotted hair, happy and spent, eating everything inside. She’s playing with her travel buddies, who she remembers every time, though they’ve only met for a handful of days throughout the past three years. I can’t help but wonder...why she needs all of the things that we’re told she must have... ...when she is living so beautifully and boldly and is so very herself, so exactly where she needs to be, just as she is, right now.
