"We were driving through the outback one night as a huge full moon rose over the desert, when we began to talk about the fact that the only human constructions visible from outer space, according to astronauts, are the pyramids and the Great Wall of China. We both instantly thought of a beautiful line from a second-century Chinese poem, "Confessions of the Great Wall": "The earth is small and blue, and I am a little crack in it." Suddenly we both had chills: this ancient Chinese poet had somehow foreseen the astronauts' vision of the Great Wall from space. It was at that moment that we conceived our next great ambition: we would walk the Wall, starting from opposite ends, and meet in the middle. No one had ever done this before, we were quite sure.
