Police officers search for survivors from a house damaged by a landslide caused by an earthquake in Atsuma, Hokkaido, Japan, on Sept. 7. The magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Japan’s northernmost main island of Hokkaido early Thursday. The death toll rose to 18 on Friday, and in one small town two dozen people remained unaccounted for after an entire mountainside collapsed on their homes, according to @apnews. Rescuers were using search dogs, backhoes and shovels as they dug through tons of mud and debris from the landslides triggered by the earthquake. After more than a day of digging there were no reports of survivors being pulled from their crushed homes in the outskirts of Atsuma, not far from the quake’s epicenter. Photograph by Kyodo/@reuters
