When Batsheva Hay began her clothing label, Batsheva, it was a mommy-and-me venture, but no one bought the children’s sizes. Customers wanted the adult dresses, which might appear comically conservative to some, but are coveted by an artsy set of women who appreciate their subversive allure. A Batsheva dress seems to say two things: “You don’t think I know what this looks like?” and “What are you going to do about it?
