This species of bird is seasonally monogamous and their breeding season can last almost two years from the start until the end of caring for the chicks. The Phoenix Islands are owned by the country of Kiribati and were protected as a massive marine protected area several years ago. Since the marine ecosystems are healthy, sea birds can forage close to the islands rather than having to journey far for food for themselves and their chicks. Fledging occurs after four to six months and is typically determined by food abundance.
