I loved handstands from the first time I saw them in the practice, not because I was good at them but because handstands were the most impossible thing for me. The first time I tried a handstand, the person who assisted me told me that I was sloppy and floppy, like a fish out of water or a piece of overcooked spaghetti. People told me that I should stop trying because my thighs were too thick. I’ve had well-intended friends call me a weakling and tell me it would be only through a miracle if I could ever do the powerful lift-ups I was practicing. I had an older male teacher tell me that my quest for strength was a “woman problem”. I was also told that my body just not be able to do a handstand, that I would be better off waiting for next lifetime. But, I kept trying. I never gave up. Somewhere along the way I found my own resolve, and my own light. I’m thankful for all the resistance because it helped me be stronger. _ I still work on strength every day. I share my story because if you’re feeling like there is no hope for you, I want you to believe that there is hope. If you feel you’re the wrong size, shape, age, color, or class, I really understand because I felt that way too. No one gets to tell you what you can and cannot do. Some people start off with advantages, that’s for sure. But if you want it, and you’re willing to work for it, handstands will happen for you. Yoga will show you a way. _ Then, eventually you’ll take those lessons, just like I did, and let yoga change your whole life. _ If you’re looking for a new handstand course join @danielrama_ on @omstarsofficial and participate in his #BecomingBalance yoga challenge sponsored by @omstarsoffical and @liforme Check our post on @omstarsofficial for details about the challenge. _ Photo @sigismondiphotography #practiceyogachangeyourworld #onebreathatatime ?
