“It started as a joke,” says Gabriela Ruiz, the Chicana performance artist and designer also known as @leather.papi, on the birth of her moniker. “My best friend was taking pictures of me in a harness and I said, ‘I’m a leather daddy,’ and she said, ‘No, you’re not a leather daddy, you’re a leather papi.’” The rest is history.
