In 1967, McCain requested a combat assignment, and was assigned to the aircraft carrier the USS Forrestal during the Vietnam War. In July of that year, a fire broke out and engulfed the deck of the ship. McCain escaped his burning jet on the deck of the vessel, and was trying to help another pilot escape when a bomb exploded. McCain was struck in the legs and chest by shrapnel. The ship was severely damaged, and the fire itself took over a full day to get under control. (Photo credit: U.S. Navy Archives)
