Coming from ponies taken to Iceland by Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries, the Icelandic horse is mentioned in literature and historical records throughout Icelandic history. Centuries of selective breeding developed the breed into its current form. The equine ancestors of the breed were likely brought to the island by Viking Age Scandinavians between 860 and 935 AD. The earliest Norse people venerated the horse as a symbol of fertility, with white horses holding a particularly special place in belief, often being offered as sacrifice at certain feasts and ceremonies. Horses also played a significant role in Norse mythology, several horses playing major roles in the Norse myths. One of them, the eight-footed pacer named Sleipnir, was owned by Odin, chief of the Norse gods.
