Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto’s most famous Temples and iconic landmarks, has been undergoing a massive renovation project for several years. The Nio-mon gate to the left as you enter the Temple grounds underwent a rebuild in 2003.

This Sai-mon (West gate) has recently been reopened after a similar refurbishment. It looks resplendent in it’s new vermillion paint, although I must admit to missing the character and worn look of the old gate which stood for hundreds of years.

The main hall is still undergoing a long and complex renovation to replace it’s thatched roof. It means the famous main Temple building is covered by scaffolding, but you can still enter and explore as normal, and seeing the scaffolding and reconstruction is just as impressive as the temple itself.
