Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Kamchatka brown bear spot-lit – Though this bear might look like he’s on stage at a rock concert this moment of serendipitous lighting happened entirely by chance. Whilst I ordinarily shoot backlit subjects on manual exposure the difference with these bears if that they were intermittently crossing over a patch of extremely bright water, that patch that occurs directly beneath the sun. This causes a massive shift in the exposure required and so this forced me to shoot more flexibly and therefore to allow aperture priority to make the exposure judgements for me. To allow for the massive underexposure that I sought, the kind where the background becomes jet black, I dialled in -3EV and then panned with this wandering bear as he passed by in front of the sun. Needless to say please, please, please be so careful if you ever even entertain the idea of doing this yourself. If you’re extremely lucky then you’ll likely have only two functioning eyes do please don’t take any chances by pointing a large telephoto at the star around which we orbit. I never of course envisaged an image like this, nor did I expect it and indeed lens flare, the kind that you can see in this image, usually results in me hitting the delete button. As it was though with a little tweak of Curves (Cntrl M) in Adobe Photoshop I was able minimise its detrimental effect and indeed the most distracting part of the flare has been cropped out at right. So here we have it, a heavy metal bear singing his heart out on stage. Now as the football is calling me, or Soccer to our friends over in the US, I lack the requisite time to conjure all kinds of genius bear/concert related puns but as always I will wait to see what you all can come up with.
