This magnificent vase is one of the most complex porcelains ever commissioned by the #Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736 to 1795). Carved and exquisitely painted with four pairs of fish, Rococo-inspired motifs and visual components inspired by China’s vast history, it is a lavish manifestation of the Emperor’s eagerness to align the majesty of his epoch with the great rulers of China’s past. In pristine condition, the vase is the pair to the famous ‘Bainbridge Vase’ of 2010, and will open Sotheby’s Chinese Works of Art sales in #HongKong this autumn. The work is presented here by Nicolas Chow, Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia and Worldwide Head of Chinese Works of Art.
