Washington, D.C.’s police department was praised by the city’s mayor as “successful in allowing the First Amendment activities to happen while maintaining peace” on Aug. 12, after a rally of white nationalists was significantly outnumbered by counter-protesters on the anniversary of the deadly violence in #Charlottesville. Police Chief Peter Newsham said only one person was arrested during the chaotic day, the Associated Press reports; authorities shielded the comparably tiny group of #whitenationalist demonstrators from a sea of counter-protesters, including members of the antifascist group #antifa, on the occasion of the scheduled Unite the Right 2 rally at Lafayette Square near the White House. After that demonstration broke up, police encountered more than 150 masked antifa protesters, who blocked traffic and marched in the rain through downtown Washington.
